Traditional Ainu instrument: Mukkuri Class
Learn how to play a traditional Ainu instrument
The mukkuri is a type of mouth harp. The player places a “tongue” or reed in their mouth and vibrates it, making a small sound that is amplified by the mouth. You can experiment with different notes by changing how wide you open your mouth and breathing in and out.
Your instructor will teach you the basics of how to play this instrument and demonstrate the rich range of sounds the mukkuri can capture, including bear cub cries, blowing wind and raindrops. You can even take the mukkuri you used in the class home as a souvenir.
